Manager's Conservation Service Award

Jim & Stephanie Carpenter have been instrumental in garnering local support and understanding for wetland restoration in the Upper Klamath Basin. They have supported a watershed-wide approach to restoration that encourages sustainability and is community based. Jim is past Co-Chair (1997-2002) and an active member of the Upper Klamath Basin Working Group (Hatfield Committee), a founding board member & Secretary of Klamath Basin Ecosystem Foundation, past Chair of the Headwaters Agricultural Water Quality Local Advisory Committee and past President and active member of Klamath Wingwatchers, Inc. His participation through these groups has helped the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reach out to new partners and local groups and landowners in the area. Stephanie has been the Chair of the Klamath Watershed Council, Klamath River Sub-basin Working Group and the West Klamath Lake Sub-basin Working Group. Both are board members of Oregon Lakes Association and OSU Master Watershed Stewards.

In addition to their participation in these groups, the Carpenters have undertaken several wetland restoration projects on Upper Klamath Lake for the benefit of migratory birds and fish. Jim and Stephanie are at the heart of a wetland restoration project in Lake Ewauna, which provides habitat for endangered Lost River and shortnose suckers as well as wading birds, waterfowl and pond turtles, on the Upper Klamath River. Jim has been very active in promoting wetland restoration through the Hatfield Committee. Without Jim and Stephanie Carpenter's support for and interest in restoring wetlands around Upper Klamath Lake and the Klamath River, the restoration efforts of the many different partners in the Upper Klamath Basin would not be as successful as they are today.

In recognition of their extraordinary contributions to the cause of wetland restoration, Jim and Stephanie Carpenter are awarded the Manager's Conservation Service Award.
